Perfect smile

One question cosmetic dentists often field is, “Can porcelain veneers deliver a perfect smile?”

The answer depends on your definition, as everyone has their own idea of what makes a smile perfect.

Dental veneers are thin porcelain shells that cover smile imperfections, and when done right, they can produce a perfect smile. But not all veneers are created equal.

A stunning smile that looks natural requires more than just veneers. For a perfect smile, you want a highly-skilled, artistic cosmetic dentist who utilizes high-quality veneers.

This blog will explore the role veneers have played in helping people achieve more attractive smiles.

The Search for the Perfect Hollywood Smile

Have you ever seen actors on the red carpet and been mesmerized by their dazzling smile? Chances are good they attained their gorgeous smiles with veneers. It’s no secret that veneers abound in Hollywood. However, it may surprise you to learn the story behind veneers began there.

In the 1920s, millions of Americans began watching films as a distraction from the Great Depression. While acting on stage in theaters offered some protection for those with flawed smiles, movies involved cameras and close-ups. This brought attention to the imperfections of actors’ smiles, which led to embarrassment for many of them.

During this time, a dentist named Charles Pincus lived in Los Angeles, and most of his clients were actors. Wanting to satisfy them, he began the search for a way to improve their smiles by hiding their flaws.

With the help of Max Factor & Company, Pincus designed small tooth covers made from a mix of plastic powder and porcelain. However, the thin shells didn’t last long and had to be replaced often.

Early Hollywood actors and actresses relied on Pincus to deliver them a stunning smile. May West, Judy Garland, and Shirley Temple were just a few of the early adopters of his invention.

Pincus created and designed the first veneers, but they had to be clipped in place. This is because there wasn’t a safe cement strong enough to bond them to the teeth.

In the 1950s, an acidic compound called etching was found. This solution opens up pores on the surface of tooth enamel, improving bonding capabilities.

Then, R.J. Simonsen and J.R. Calamia found a way to combine etching with the veneers that Pincus developed.

And voila–the modern veneer treatment was born.

How can veneers deliver the perfect smile?

What is a perfect smile?

Since thoughts differ, a good cosmetic dentist starts by asking what you don’t like about your smile. Once we understand your concerns, we come up with an individualized treatment plan to give you the smile of your dreams.

Generally, patients who desire veneers are looking to fix teeth that are:

  • Crooked
  • Small
  • Misshapen
  • Misaligned
  • Cracked
  • Chipped
  • Discolored
  • Gapped

Veneers deliver a stunning smile by covering the front of anterior teeth with a thin porcelain shell to hide imperfections. Depending on your desires, they can be made whiter to brighten your smile or blended to match your current shade.

Our dental practice uses porcelain because the material has the same reflective qualities as enamel.

A perfect smile should also look natural. Our highly-trained cosmetic dentist will blend artistry with sound dental techniques when revamping your smile. We will ensure the color and shape fit perfectly with your natural teeth and face shape.

How long does it take for a smile correction?

We understand the desire to enjoy a beautiful smile, but delivering quality results takes a few weeks and at least two dental appointments. First, our doctor needs to understand your personal goals. Then, he needs to examine your teeth to see if veneers will meet your goals.

If the cosmetic shells are recommended, we will set an appointment to prep your teeth. This requires the removal of small amounts of tooth structure so the veneers can deliver a symmetrical appearance.

We will then make impressions and send them to the dental lab for fabrication of your custom made dental veneers.

Once they arrive at our office, our doctor will place the veneers using strong cement. After placement, you may need to avoid hot and cold drinks.

When properly cared for, high quality veneers can last for decades.

Can veneers deliver a perfect smile? Our patients certainly think so.

Taking Care of Your New Smile

Maintaining your new veneers is essential.

You will want to avoid chewing on hard objects and foods, such as pen caps, fingernails, hard candy, and certain nuts. You should also avoid any abrasive toothpaste that contains gritty parts, such as whitening toothpaste. These can erode and wear down porcelain over time.

It will also be important to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Tooth decay can loosen or break the bond between the veneer and your natural tooth. This can cause the cosmetic shell to fall off.

Gum disease can lead to recession, which can expose the base of your veneers.

To keep your smile healthy, proper dental care includes daily flossing, brushing twice a day, and visiting your dentist every six months. At your dental visits, we will examine your teeth and veneers to ensure they are healthy and strong.

In addition, we suggest protecting your smile with mouthguards during sports and addressing any bruxism issues

Candidacy Factors

Do you wonder if you are a candidate for veneers?

Before seeking a perfect smile, you should enjoy good oral health. If you have gum disease, dental decay, or require a tooth restoration, this will need to be addressed first.

Candidates also require healthy tooth enamel.

Our doctor will determine if this treatment is right for you during your consultation.

Moreover, veneers require investments in time and money. A beautiful smile can open doors to promotions and new relationships. A great smile can make you look smart, young, and friendly.
