Regular dental checkups

A visit to your dentist can go one of two ways. If you follow the American Dental Association’s suggestion of checkups every six months, your time in the dentist’s chair can pass quickly and comfortably. If you find yourself among the 74% of Americans who only see a dentist when a problem develops, you might discover more than one oral health issue at your checkup. Not visiting your dentist regularly may lead to costly and lengthy procedures you could avoid with perfectly healthy teeth. In this article, Dr. James Fondriest explains how waiting too long for a regular dental checkup may lead to a number of oral health issues.

One Thing Leads to Another

Americans wait an average of three years between checkups to see a dentist. In that time, your usual brushing and flossing may not do enough to maintain good oral health. Only 22% of Americans say they floss on a daily basis, and by the age of 17, nearly 80% of people develop a cavity. More than 70% suffer from some degree of gum disease. If you come to your dentist with a problem like a toothache three years after your last regular dental checkup, a simple cleaning won’t fix the problem. Your tooth could hurt because of a cavity, damaged dental work, teeth grinding (bruxism), or gum disease. The toothache may also come from a crack or break. Each of these issues can contribute to the other in some way.

For instance, if you grind your teeth, you increase your risk of tooth fracture. If a broken tooth causes your toothache, your dentist may also find gum disease, that could have been treated earlier, eroding your gums. Regular trips to the dentist allow us to diagnose and treat oral problems early such as oral cancer, preventing them from escalating.
