Cosmetic Dental Questions You’ve Been Wanting To Ask

Cosmetic dentistry can seem mysterious and off limits to those of us who know little about it. At one time it seemed as if cosmetic dental treatments were only for the rich and famous. Today cosmetic treatments are becoming more and more popular among the general public. While the cost of cosmetic treatments varies, they are available to anyone, anytime. Today we cover some cosmetic dental questions you have been wanting to ask.

Question: Does teeth whitening work for everyone?

Answer: No.  There are circumstances where tooth whitening is not successful. Teeth with severe discoloration or intrinsic tooth stains do not respond well to teeth whitening. In such cases, other options such as veneers or dental bonding are recommended.

Question: What cosmetic treatments are available for people with missing teeth?

Answer: Dental implants are a permanent cosmetic procedure used to replace missing teeth. However, implants require a complex and invasive surgical procedure. Other options include bridges and dentures.

Question: Are smokers restricted from receiving certain cosmetic procedures?

Answers: Smokers are at risk for a number of oral health issues including periodontal disease, leukoplakia, inflammation of the salivary glands, mouth and throat cancers, and loss of jawbone structure.  Periodontal disease can lead to implant failure. Unhealthy jawbone structure also increases the risk of implant failure. Another cosmetic procedure not necessarily recommended for smokers is teeth whitening. Because smoking stains teeth, the effects of whitening treatments will not last.
