Alternatives to Dentures
When you are missing teeth, you may be embarrassed to smile or talk. Missing teeth are a sign of aging, and dentures, a traditional option to replace multiple teeth, are also associated with old age. But Dr. James Fondriest, a Chicago cosmetic dentist, offers two alternatives to traditional dentures that could replace your teeth and rejuvenate the way you look: dental implants and dental bridges.
Dental implants are small, titanium fixtures that are placed within the jawbone. After the gum heals and the jawbone integrates with the implant (a process called osseointegration), a fixture, like a crown, a bridge, or a denture, is secured on top of it. Implants also preserve the jawbone (which can deteriorate when teeth are missing) and prevent further tooth loss. They require no alteration of healthy teeth and are independently supported.
Bridges replace multiple teeth in a row, and permanently fixed to crowns placed on two existing teeth. Dr. Fondriest offers two options for bridgework: all-porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). The all-porcelain fixtures are not as strong as the PFM bridges, but they have the translucent quality of real teeth. Dr. Fondriest places high-quality PFM bridges composed of gold entirely encased in ceramic, so they also closely resemble natural teeth. The proper bridgework choice for you depends on the strength of your bite and your aesthetic goals, and other factors that Dr. Fondriest will discuss at your consultation.
