How Dental Implants Help Secure Dentures

Replacing missing teeth is essential to maintaining good dental health. When a tooth is lost, the body often deprives the jawbone of calcium and phosphorus, minerals that promote bone density. Missing teeth can cause a variety of oral issues, from bone degeneration to bite misalignment. However, many people avoid replacing missing teeth because they are uncomfortable with the idea of dentures. Your Lake Forest dentist, Dr. James Fondriest, explains why dental implants contribute to more stable and natural-looking dentures.

Implants Help Secure Dentures

Slippage is a common and embarrassing problem with traditional dentures. Since dentures are typically held in place with messy adhesives, slippage often occurs during talking or eating. Dentures can also cause painful gum irritation and because they do not stimulate the jawbone, they promote bone deterioration. Implant-retained dentures require no adhesives, stimulate the bone, and provide dependable tooth replacement.

Placing Dental Implant Retained Dentures

At Lake Forest Dental Arts, Dr. Fondriest offers implant-retained dentures. After your initial consultation and oral examination, Dr. Fondriest will decide whether dental implants are the right choice for replacing your missing teeth. He will then take impressions of your teeth, which will be used to craft your custom-made dentures. The next step will involve placing titanium posts in specific sockets of missing teeth. After securing the posts, expect three months before your final denture can be attached. This healing time allows the bone to bond with the posts, preventing bone loss. You will, of course, wear a temporary during the three month osseointegration phase.

Abutments will be added to the posts once the healing is completed. These allow the dentures to snap into place on top of the posts. You will walk out of our practice with a full, beautiful smile. No sticky adhesives, no embarrassing slippage, and easy maintenance.
