Tannins and Tooth Stains

A variety of factors can lead to discoloration in our teeth. Tannins, which are found in several popular beverages, play a unique role in causing teeth stains. In today’s blog, Dr. James Fondriest, explains how tannins aid in discoloring your smile and discusses our professional teeth whitening procedures.

What are Tannins?

The dark color you find in drinks such as tea or coffee is caused by tannic acid. Tannins coat the teeth and allow stain-causing chromogens to attach themselves to the enamel. This process results in discoloration of the teeth. In addition, tannic acid also softens enamel, which leaves teeth vulnerable to the harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Preventing Stains

To help prevent stains, try to cut back on beverages containing stain-causing tannins. Avoid tea, coffee, red wine, and soda. Red wine, tea, and coffee provide helpful antioxidants, so you don’t need to cut them out entirely. Remember, moderation is key. Rinse your mouth after consuming coffee or similar beverages. Proper dental habits also help prevent teeth stains. Brush twice a day, and floss at least once. Use antibacterial mouthwash, as well. These simple steps help cleanse your mouth of tannins and harmful bacteria.
